5 Summer Campsite Safety Tips

a tent in a field

As the weather gets warmer, it’s time to dust off your camping gear and head out to a campsite for some family friendly fun. However, camping can unfortunately come with a lot of risks and potential hazards. Follow these 5 tips to help keep your summer camping safe.

  1. Follow standard grilling safety procedures. Wildfires can spark quickly from open flames coming from your grilling equipment. Be sure to follow standard safety tips at all times to keep your campfire feast from turning into a wildfire nightmare.
  2. Use proper fire monitoring equipment. Smoke and carbon monoxide are extremely hazardous and can cause serious health issues. Keep smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your RV, tent, or at your campsite to continuously monitor these dangerous fumes.
  3. Stay away from wild animals. Keep a safe distance and do not feed or pet the wildlife around your campsite. Also, be sure to keep any pets inside a vehicle or securely restrained to prevent confrontation with wild animals.
  4. Take care of your vehicle. If you leave your vehicle unattended at any time, be sure to apply your emergency break and leave windows rolled up completely. Take extra precautions to make sure you do not forget or lose the location of your vehicle by marking its location clearly on a map.
  5. Drink purified bottled water. Avoid drinking from any freshwater sources such as rivers or streams as the water may be contaminated due to its lack of professional filtration. If you are forced to drink from a natural body of water, manually purify it through boiling or use a purification kit purchased from an outdoors store.

Don’t let the inherent dangers of camping keep you from enjoying your summer activities. Give us a call today at 505-294-9414 so that we can help you get the right insurance for your RV and camping equipment.  You can also fill out an online quote form!
